Volunteering is a great and noble thing to do. It means you're willing to do work for nothing. It's how alot of things are run, with mostly volunteers. But is it always worth it? I say no it isnt.
I havew PLENTY of volunteer experience. I worked for the YMCA at a day camp for four weeks during the summer for four years. At first, it was just for fun, but then I started going back to try for a paid position. But each year the answer was the same: "we are offering you a volunteer position". Then the economy went down the toilet, so the YMCA stopped paying employess. I then said goodbye to that. On top of the YMCA stuff, my dad is a member of the Lions club here in Edina. The Lions club is a service club, so they do alot of volunteer work, and I've helped out. I've rung the bell for the salvation army, raised money for White Cane Day, and helped sell stuffed animals and baked goods at pancake breakfasts. I've frozen my butt off, been snubbed, and treated rudley all for the joy of volunteering! Plus I've been a girl scout for a long time and done mayny volunteer things with them.
Now picture this: senior year starts, so I've got homework, friends, college applications, and theater to worry about. College isn't getting any cheaper,so i should have a job to help pay for it. But do I have a job? No. I volunteer instead. I ask to be worked off my feet for no money or anything.
In conclusion, volunteering is nice, but sometimes it isn't worth the time and energy. College won't pay for itself, nor will thousands of dollars drop out of the sky.
